Healing With Words: A Writer's Cancer Journey is a compassionate and wry self-help memoir written by an award-winning prolific author, nurse and poet, who at the age of forty-seven found her life shattered first by a DCIS (early breast cancer) diagnosis and five years later by another, seemingly unrelated and incurable cancer--multiple myeloma. The book includes the author's experiences, reflections, poetry and journal entries, in addition to writing prompts for readers to express their own personal story. Raab's journals have provided a safe haven and platform to validate and express her feelings. MY REVIEW

First of all, my heartfelt thanks to the author Diana Raab for sharing her personal story in Healing with Words. She is open and transparent about all aspects of her journey through breast cancer, as well as her ongoing diagnosis of multiple myeloma. Unfortunately, we are all touched by the ravages of cancer. Maybe we have experienced it personally, or maybe someone we love is struggling against this ruthless enemy.

Diana details her personal reaction when she was initially diagnosed with breast cancer. She takes us along to each of her doctor's appointments, the needle biopsy, and then her surgery and recovery. She shares so much more than the procedures that she went through ... but also her feelings, her frustrations and her fears during each part of the journey.

At the end of each chapter, thought provoking questions are asked, prompting the reader to journal her own thoughts. One example question is, "Who is the first person you told about your breast cancer? How did they react?"

This book has impacted me in ways I can hardly describe. Someone very dear to me has been walking this journey over the past year and a bit. I wish I had read this book before her journey began. I would have been more supportive, more understanding, and maybe less afraid. Diana Raab has answered so many of the questions that I had, but was afraid to ask.

Please consider reading this book, but not just for yourself. Read it for your sisters, your mothers, your daughters, and your friends. You won't regret it.
