In Every Heartbeat by Kim Vogel Sawyer
As three friends who grew up in the same orphanage head off to college together, they each harbor a special plan for the future. Libby Conley hopes to become a famous journalist. Pete Leidig believes God has called him to study to become a minister. And Bennett Martin plans to pledge a fraternity, find a place to belong, and have as much fun as possible. But as tensions rise around the world on the brink of World War I, the friends' differing aspirations and opinions begin to divide them, as well.
When Libby makes a shocking discovery about Pete's family, will it drive a final wedge between the friends or bond them in ways they never anticipated?

I believe this is the first book I have ever read by Kim Vogel Sawyer, but it was like coming back to visit with an old friend. There are three main characters and the story begins as they go off to their first year of university. All three are close friends, having been raised in the same orphanage. Each has their own painful past and regrets about their less than perfect childhood.
There are many discoveries and surprises within the first few months at university, some of which are totally devastating. They discover things about themselves, their past, their faith, and also about each other. This is a great story, filled with compassion, forgiveness, and also of fierce loyalty to friends and family, no matter how difficult the circumstances seemed at the time.
If you enjoy historical romance with a strong focus on God's provisions and the importance of following His plans for life, then you will really enjoy In Every Heartbeat. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.
