Katie Up and Down the Hall by Glenn Plaskin

A personal memoir by bestselling author and celebrity journalist Glenn Plaskin, KATIE is a moving story about a man who discovers the true meaning of family after adopting a cocker spaniel puppy. Through the magnetic personality of his mischievous dog, the author soon makes powerful connections with several of his down-the-hall neighbors in a high-rise located in the unique Battery Park City neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. First, Katie trots into the lives of Pearl and Arthur, a warm-hearted elderly couple just a few doors down from Glenn. Later, John, a single Dad, and his rambunctious young son, Ryan, also move in and are seduced by Katie's charms.

All of their lives are profoundly changed as they are transformed from neighbors to friends to family, with Pearl as matriarch. The motherless boy finds a "Granny"; his Dad inherits a mother, Glenn discovers a confidante. Set in New York City, we witness nearly sixteen years of antics and family adventures spanning Hollywood high times, bad health, accidents, blustery winters, even the terrors of 9/11. Through it all, the family clings to each other, sharing a deep bond that give each comfort, support and security.

Based upon a widely-read article in Family Circle, here is an unforgettable story about the love that makes a family-one that transcends the hard realities of time, tragedy, and inevitable loss.

MY THOUGHTS

If you have ever loved and lost a pet, you will adore this book. I have been totally fascinated by Katie's story, and also by the story of the people she loved so dearly. This adorable cocker spaniel impacted so many people in her neighbourhood, and she brought them together as a family.

I laughed at some of the stories of Glenn as he interviewed celebrities and legends such as Katharine Hepburn, and he often brought Katie along with him. I especially enjoyed the story of the day he brought Katie with him to Katharine Hepburn's house. She was less than hospitable, and insisted that Katie must stay in the car, even though it was a very hot day. Katie won the battle that day, by jumping out of the car window and doing her business in the garden. Many of the interviews and experiences with celebrities were extremely interesting, and they gave a different perspective than what we normally see in magazines or on television.

One thing that I loved about this book is that the author narrates the entire story. You can hear the compassion and love in his voice as he tells the story of the sweet dog who captured his heart. He also gives a passionate account of the people that were brought into his life because of Katie's influence.

I haven't listened to very many audio books before, but this one is a keeper! I will definitely listen to it again. If you have never listened to an audio book before, try this one. The story of Katie and her adopted family will capture your heart, and if you are like me ... you will dream about adopting a dog ... just like Katie!
