Esther Lange doesn’t love her fiancé—she’s trapped in an engagement after a mistaken night of passion.
Still, she grieves him when he’s lost in battle, the letters sent to her by the medic at his side giving her a strange comfort, so much that she strikes up a correspondence with Peter Hess, an Iowa farmboy. Or is he? Peter Hess is not who he seems. Indeed, he’s hiding a secret, something that could cost them both their lives, especially when the past comes back to life. A bittersweet love song of the home front war between duty and the heart...a battle where only one will survive.

Susan May Warren has an amazing gift of taking her readers into another time and place. The book titled Nightingale transported me into the lives of Esther and Peter, two lonely people who were unfortunate victims of a brutal time in history. Through World War II and the years immediately following, they both learned the importance of their faith in God, no matter how desperate the situation seemed at the time.
Historically, this novel is a gem. The author vividly described the anguish, frustration and desperation of persons caught in the ravages of war. It also portrayed the dedication and determination to make a difference, in spite of unbelievably difficult situations.
I highly recommend this book, and it is the type of story that will make you think about it long after the last page. I give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars!
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of Nightingale through Litfuse Publicity Group, in exchange for my honest review.
