The Clouds Roll Away is a story about a female FBI agent as she investigates a modern day cross burning at Rapland, the home of a well known rap singer. I found the storyline different than so many books, and it was a refreshing change.
Raleigh puzzles over her mother's rather bizarre behavior as she tries to deal with the loss of her husband. The relationship between Raleigh and her long-time friend DeMott keeps everyone guessing. All of this happens in her personal life as she tries to solve the mystery of the burning cross, some strange and rare chemicals, and numerous murder victims. The plot gets very interesting when she starts to question who the real victim is.
This entire book is filled with unexpected twists and turns, and it's a real page turner. It combines a detailed FBI investigation, an extremely dangerous undercover assignment, a little romance, and a journey of faith. I am very interested in reading other books in the Raleigh Harmon series, The Rivers Run Dry (March 2009) and The Mountains Bow Down (coming in Spring 2011).
