Nickels by Karen Baney

Niki Turner has finally arrived. Her career as a Software Engineer is soaring—she has just been offered the company’s most sought after account, Helitronics. Life would be perfect, if she could stop her roommate from playing matchmaker.

Then Kyle Jacobs mysteriously re-enters her life. As painful memories resurface, his presence turns her life upside down and threatens to waylay her career. She must find a way to work with him—after all, he’s the helicopter flight consultant for the new flight control system she’s coding.

Can she forget the past and see him as the new man he has become? Or will her resentment keep her from finding what she has always been searching for?

This contemporary novel is an upbeat and compelling story set in the Phoenix Metro Area. Karen Baney shows a new side to her writing with great whit and banter between the main characters. Inspired by her love of romance and of computers, this story takes readers on a journey filled with laughter and tears.

Karen Baney, in addition to writing Christian historical fiction and contemporary romance novels, works as a Software Engineer. Spending over twenty years as an avid fan of both genres, Karen loves writing stories set in Arizona.

Her faith plays an important role both in her life and in her writing. Karen and her husband make their home in Gilbert, Arizona, with their two dogs. She also holds a Masters of Business Administration from Arizona State University.

I have become a huge Karen Baney fan, and can't wait to see what she comes up with next! Karen's first series of books called The Prescott Pioneers was fantastic, and I honestly expected that she would follow with more historical fiction like the first three. Nickels is as far removed from the first series as night and day, and maybe I like this direction even more.

The main character in Nickels is a software engineer working with the Department of Defense on a software program that is very high tech and secretive. Niki is comfortable and confident in her career skills, and also in relating to powerful men. However she has experienced huge loss and disappointment in her life, and she won't let herself be vulnerable again.

Along comes Kyle. He teased her relentlessly when they were in high school, and she is not willing to give him a chance at friendship. They are thrust together in a working arrangement and forced to finally face their true feelings. Secrets from Kyle's past threaten to damage their fragile relationship.

Intertwined with a strong message of faith and forgiveness, this novel is a fantastic read. I loved the humor, the transparency and vulnerability of the characters. I highly recommend this book!!
