Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child: An initiative of Samaritan's Purse

OCC is a hands-on project that brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoeboxes packed by Canadians. It is one way to remind children suffering as a result of war, poverty, famine, disease, and disaster that they are loved and not forgotten.

Each shoebox is filled by Canadians with hygiene items, school supplies, and toys, and is given to children regardless of gender, race, or religion. When culturally appropriate, copies of a book entitled The Greatest Gift, which has been translated into 130 different languages, are offered to children after the shoeboxes have already been distributed.

My thoughts:

Packing shoe boxes before Christmas has been a tradition in my family for many years, and I am thrilled to highlight this great initiative here on my blog this year. It excites me to think of the children all over the world who will have a happy Christmas because of these boxes that are lovingly packed just for them.

This year, it was a highlight to be able to build this special Lego Christmas shoebox that represents the journey that these little boxes make from our location to the homes of the children that will be blessed by these gifts.

Another thing that was new to me this year was to be able to see the little gift book that is presented to the children in addition to their individual boxes.

Together with my children and grandchildren, packing shoe boxes each year is definitely a highlight of our Christmas preparations. This year, the kids have requested that instead of giving them gifts, they would like the whole family to put money towards purchasing farm animals through Samaritan's Purse (especially goats and chickens) for families in need. We are so blessed living here in Canada, and this is just a small way that we share our blessings with others.

If you have never packed a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child, please consider doing it this year. And I promise, you won't regret it.

Here are some great resources:

Thanks to Graf-Martin Communications and Samaritan's Purse for the opportunity to share my thoughts about this great program.

  1. We've been packing shoeboxes, as a community, for many years as well. This year we packed 105. It's a worthwhile tradition.
